Gluten Free Living

gluten free living, healthy perspectiveThere are wide-ranging reasons for wanting to follow a gluten-free diet, from a gluten intolerance or wheat allergy, to wanting to lose weight or being diagnosed as coeliac.

For me, I’d simply eaten too much gluten in my life, my body had enough and it pretty much fell apart and attacked me in a number of ways – lethargy, bloating, depression, gut problems – you name it, I felt I had it! Add to that the research I’d been reading into the long-term damage of eating grains and I was a convert.

Like everything, once you start reading up on what gluten does to your body, you start to question why the heck (polite word!) gluten is anywhere on our supermarket shelves.

Going gluten-free is HARD, I’m not going to pretend it’s a walk in the park. Your body gets dependant on it so breaking the habit is not easy. It is, however, well worth it – if you can commit to going gluten-free for 3 weeks, you will feel the benefits!

As always, you should talk to your doctor if you're considering changing your diet or think you have an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten.

It is, like I say, easier said than done. Pesky food companies manage to cram gluten into products you really wouldn’t expect to have gluten in – for example soy sauce, most stocks, any food with “wheat” in the ingredients, barley, malt syrup, malt extract, malt flavouring, malt vinegar, many sauces, liquorice and beer.

On top of that now are an ever-growing amount of products on the supermarket shelves which claim to be ‘gluten free’ with the additional subliminal message of “so it must be healthy”. READ THE INGREDIENTS is all I will say, often the ingredients used to make a product gluten-free may be just as damaging to your body as the original gluten-filled product. It’s another reason why I now follow a predominantly paleo and primal lifestyle – just eat real food that’s unprocessed and grain free.

The trick? Get intimately friendly with ingredients lists on everything, question everything and use apps to help you detect gluten in products when you’re not sure.

It goes without saying that you should go to the doctor if you have any concerns over gluten and how it’s affecting your health. If you don’t get a good answer, look at alternative therapies such as kinesiology or chinese medicine.
