Dairy-Free Living


The reasons for wanting to pursue a dairy-free diet can be varied – usually an allergy to milk protein or intolerance to lactose which leads to all kinds of unhelpful health problems, including bloating, vomiting, diarrhoea/constipation, eczema, asthma, headaches and joint pain.

How it affects you varies, for me it was mainly feeling ‘gunky’ in my nose, head and lungs (only word I can think of, sorry!). I cut it out entirely for a while but have slowly re-introduced it in moderation (mainly just milk in my tea and the odd bit of cheese).

There are dairy alternatives out there, my favourite by a mile is making my own Homemade almond milk, it’s so easy and so tasty!

I am a BIG fan of goat’s milk products so if you find cow milk dairy isn’t working for you it’s always worth trying goat’s milk (or sheep milk products), it really helped me feel less, yes you guessed it, gunky.

As always, go and talk to your doctor if you’re concerned about your health in any way (or, ahem, say a kinesiologist).

As with gluten-free intolerance/allergy, the ‘best’ approach is just to eat real, unprocessed dairy-free food. Those pesky food companies will have hidden dairy in all sorts of products, for example:

  • Breakfast cereals
    Chocolate
    Crisps & flavoured nuts
    Sauces
    Gravy granules
    Pizza
    Processed meats
